We were commissioned by NGE fondation to carry out the G3 geotechnical study as part of the reinforcement of the north abutment of the Tauves viaduct on behalf of the Puy de Dôme departmental council.
A nailed wall was built directly on the old structure to secure the backfill of the abutment. Shotcrete and mesh were applied to the old spalls.
The geotechnical study was carried out in 3D to ensure that there was no interaction between the nails on the opposite walls (parallel to the track) and the perpendicular walls (abutment face).
This study is complex because :
- the need to reinforce an existing structure while maintaining traffic flow,
- definition of the method of compliance through the concrete scales,
- the definition and calculation of nails in 3 dimensions to ensure that they do not interact,
- defining the variable thickness of the shotcrete and welded mesh wall in order to distribute the stresses over the entire structure
With this reinforcement work, the structure has now been strengthened and will enable this mountainous area to be served by road.
