As part of the renewal of an old track around Nîmes (line 800 000 and line 810 000), the SNCF commissioned us to determine the granulometry of the ballast layer (ballast + fine particles).

During this study, analyses were carried out on two types of samples :

  • Fully recycled ballast : a sample comprising only old ballast, which is screened and then returned to the track
  • Partially recycled ballast : sample comprising a mixture of old, re-sifted ballast and new ballast

Over the course of the 11-week operation, 69 samples were taken along more than 25 kilometres of the two lines combined.
